Second Hand September – more than just fast fashion.

We’re in the throes of Second Hand September – why should you care?

First of all, what is Second Hand September?

Second-hand September was created by Oxfam to shine a spotlight on the environmental impact of fast fashion and encourage people to embrace pre-loved clothes. It might make you think of revamping your own wardrobe or hunting for a vintage gem, and yes, that’s part of it! But here’s the twist, there’s one category of clothing that could do with a serious sustainability glow-up all year round… school uniforms.

It’s the perfect time to swap, donate, and rethink how we kit out students, because pre-loved uniforms aren’t just eco-friendly, they are a win for families and schools too.

Why should we consider school uniforms during Second Hand September?

In 2025, families are facing the rising costs of school life, and uniforms remain one of the biggest ongoing expenses. At the same time, the fashion industry is still one of the world’s largest polluters. By choosing second-hand, schools and families can make a real difference.

Because the fast fashion industry doesn’t just cater to adults.

School uniforms are often mass-produced, leading to wasteful practices that harm the environment. By opting for second-hand uniforms, parents can avoid contributing to the environmental damage caused by producing more clothes than are needed.

Most school uniforms are designed to withstand daily wear and tear, which means second-hand pieces are usually in excellent condition and can be reused for years. This helps reduce waste and combat the harmful effects of fast fashion.

Because kids outgrow their clothes at lightning speed.

Every parent will feel the pain of this one! Unfortunately, the school uniform which fits perfectly in September, may no longer fit by the spring term. This makes buying brand-new uniforms impractical unless you opt for jumpers a couple of sizes too big (something we’ll always advocate for!)

Rather than buying new clothes that your children will only wear for a few months, opting for pre-loved uniforms makes it easier to keep up with growth spurts without breaking the bank.

Second Hand September helps to teach children about environmental responsibility

Second Hand September is not just about saving money or clearing out closets; it’s about creating a culture of sustainability throughout our lives. Parents can use this month as an educational moment, showing kids that reusing and recycling clothes is a simple way to help protect the planet. By choosing second-hand school uniforms, parents can set a powerful example for their children about the importance of reducing waste and making environmentally conscious choices.

How schools can get involved this September

If your school hasn’t joined in before, September is the perfect time to start:

Host a back-to-school swap or sale – Give parents and pupils a chance to pick up what they need affordably.

Shout about sustainability – Share your school’s commitment to reducing waste through second-hand on newsletters and social media.

Celebrate the stories – Every pre-loved jumper or tie has a story. Highlight the impact families are making by donating and reusing.

Make it easyUniformd take the stress out of organising, so second-hand becomes a seamless part of school life.

Second-hand September may last just 30 days, but the habits built this month can last all year. By rethinking how we buy and use uniforms, schools can set an example for young people about the value of sustainability, responsibility, and community spirit.

At Uniformd, we believe that every blazer saved, every skirt reused, and every tie passed on is a step closer to a greener, more affordable future for schools and families.
