At Uniformd, we know that school uniform is a big part of every student’s daily life, but it’s not always their favourite part. While uniform can help reduce pressure to follow trends and promote a sense of equality, it’s also important to listen to the students who wear it every day. That’s why we spoke to 13-year-old Amelie to hear their honest thoughts on school uniform.
Here’s what they had to say!
As a 13-year-old student, school uniform is nothing new in my school life. If I’m honest school uniform is not my favourite thing, and I’m sure many other people my age would agree. Most students around my age are beginning to want to express themselves and think of school uniform as something that stops our creativity. However, we can easily find other ways to express ourselves. For example, our school bags and/or accessories, can be chosen to fit our preferences.
The benefits of school uniform
A benefit to a school uniform, is a reduced level of stress to try and fit in by wearing expensive logos and brands and the latest trends. Our school uniform also encourages us to be aware of the fact we are at school and encourages you into a working mindset. However, school uniform is commonly very uncomfortable and many items of it seems unnecessary; like silly things like buckles on skirts only used for the aesthetic.
Problems with school uniform
I think that the main problem with school uniforms is that they are designed by people who don’t have to wear them every day for 6 hours. If I created my school uniform, I would keep the blazers and the shirts, but I would change the ties to Clip Ons and the skirts to plain black ones with shorts built in. I would also keep the trousers the same but I would add shorts to the summer uniform.
Hearing from students highlights an important point, school uniforms should be practical, comfortable, and designed with those who wear them in mind.
