Free festive activities to enjoy with young children over the Christmas period.

christmas lights in London - a great free activity for children

Ho Ho Ho… ’tis the season of cheesy movies, Christmas markets and a nice warm cup of mulled wine (for the grown ups at least!).

We are here to talk about all things Christmas! As we edge closer to the Christmas break, it’s time to make sure the kids are entertained, and with any luck not completely stuck to the TV whilst you’re wrapping up the presents (although we’re totally on board with snuggling up to watch the Gruffalo every year!).

Getting ready for the festive period can be stressful but it is also a time of merriment and quality time spent with the family.

At Uniformd, our focus is on making life affordable for parents of school-age children; we know how expensive this period can be, especially when you have multiple children, so we have come up with some fun, festive and FREE activities.

Free and festive activities for the Christmas break:

With the weather being typically cold, you may not want to leave the comfort of your home (and that nice warm heating). So, we have come up with some great stay-at-home activities that will keep the kids busy!

  • Festive baking- Baking is a fun activity during the festive period and there are many recipes out there to try! When we think of Christmas as kids we remember the yummy shortbread cookies, mince pies for Santa and gingerbread houses. All these can be turned into a whole day of activities- baking the sweet treats then decorating them with some colourful icing pens and edible stickers.
  • Making Christmas decorations- We spoke about this in a lot more detail on our Sustainable Christmas Blog, but it’s a great activity and reduces the cost of buying Christmas decorations, because who doesn’t love saving money! There are lots of fun step-by-steps on how to make your own Christmas tree decorations, Christmas wreaths and fun fabric ribbons to tie around your gifts.
  • Create a fun winter scene jar- By using an old jar that you may have at home and some paper, you can make a wonderful winter themed jar that can be hung up around the house.
  • The all-important movie night- We all love a cosy movie night, snuggled up on the sofa with some yummy snacks, watching our favourite Christmas films!

Free family outings for the Christmas break:

If you tire of being at home, then we have found some Christmasy activities to get the family out the house!

  • Visit a Light Trail- This is a fun and free activity to do with the kids that will keep them entertained. There are many light trails dotted around the country, where artists have created special themed artwork that they light up at night. There is one in London which is called Winter Light at Southbank, it is beautiful and free to visit. It is right next to the Southbank Winter Market (another free activity).
  • Christmas Markets- No matter where you are, there’s a Christmas market waiting for you! With lots of fun games and activities for the kids, and that all important glass (or glasses) of mulled wine calling your name!
  • Christmas Lights- All the lights have now been switched on and England is twinkling away in all its Christmasy glory. You can make a trip to your local town and see their wonderful Christmas decorations or pay a visit to the famous London lights on Oxford Street and Carnaby Street.
  • Christmas Carol Concerts- Churches are always holding carol concerts around the Christmas break. You can pay a visit to your local church on a day they have a performance, these are usually free and are beautiful to go and see.
  • Staying Local- Many areas across the UK have their own Christmas events happening during the break, such as fairs and grottos. Simply check out your local council page or even any school pages and see what events they might have on.

Which of these will you be trying?
