At Uniformd, we are big believers in reusing what we already have, but what happens when school uniform becomes too worn or stained to donate? Just because a uniform has reached the end of its wearability, it doesn’t mean that it has to end up in the bin. That’s where upcycling comes in.
Why upcycling school uniform matters
School uniforms are often made of durable materials that are designed to last through countless washes and rough-and-tumble days. But when they’re no longer fit to pass on, throwing them away contributes to textile waste, one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the UK. Each British person throws away 3.1kg of textiles each year on average, with 1.7kg ending up in landfill, making the UK the fourth largest producer of textile waste in Europe, generating approximately 206,456 tonnes of textile waste annually (Waste Managed)
Upcycling is a fun and creative way to breathe new life into old uniforms. It reduces landfill waste, sparks creativity, and teaches children the value of sustainability. It also aligns with the mission of School Sustainability Day, the day is all about encouraging schools, pupils, and families to take simple, practical steps towards a greener future. Upcycling is a perfect activity to mark the occasion, demonstrating how even small actions can make a lasting impact on our planet and school communities.

Upcycling ideas for old school uniform
Here are a few simple ways to repurpose tired school uniform into something fresh and useful:
- Book bags from school jumpers
Cut and stitch worn jumpers into tote bags or bookmarks.
- Patchwork pencil cases
Combine fabric from shirts or dresses to create colourful, sustainable pencil cases.
- Aprons for art class
Transform old shirts into aprons for art classes or at-home painting activities.
- Bunting for decorating classrooms
Use uniform fabrics to make decorative bunting as part of a sustainable activity for School Sustainability Day.
- Scrunchies and headbands
Turn skirt or dress fabric into a scrunchie or headband that can be used daily.
Not only are these projects great for the planet, but they also make for fun classroom or home activities to get children thinking creatively about sustainability.

School Sustainability Day
With School Sustainability Day taking place on 6th June, now is the perfect time to start conversations about textile waste, reuse, and the power of small actions. You can encourage pupils to bring in outgrown uniforms and turn one of your classes into an upcycling workshop. You can then create a display showcasing what those uniforms have become, linking learning to sustainable practices.
At Uniformd, we’re here to help schools and families make sustainable choices easier, from reusing uniforms through our platform to finding creative ways to reduce waste and raise funds. We want to do everything we can to keep school uniform out of landfill sites and reduce textile waste.
