At Uniformd, we see sustainability as something that should be part of everyday school life, not just something we talk about once a year.
Earth Day is a great moment to reflect on how our choices affect the planet. It’s an opportunity to engage students and kickstart conversations about our role in shaping a more sustainable future. But while the day is important, the real change happens when those conversations turn into everyday habits.
Why Earth Day Matters
Earth Day began as a movement to push for environmental change. Today, it’s a reminder that our choices, whether big or small, impact the world around us. From climate change and pollution, to waste and resource consumption, Earth Day gives us a moment to pause and reflect on what we can do differently.
In schools, it’s a perfect time to introduce or revisit sustainable practices, encourage students to think critically, and involve the whole school in meaningful action towards sustainability.
Earth Day Activities for Schools
Whether you’re planning something for Earth Day itself or looking for ideas that extend into the summer term, here are a few ways to bring sustainability to life in school:
1. Carbon Footprint Challenge
Get students to calculate their personal or classroom carbon footprints, then brainstorm ways to lower them. This educates children on what aspects of their life most affect their carbon footprint and what they can do to reduce it.
2. Pre-Loved Uniform Drive
Encourage families to donate gently used school uniforms or school related items to the Uniformd store. This is a simple way to reduce waste, support other families, and keep items in use for longer.
3. Plastic-Free Packed Lunch Day
Challenge students and teachers to bring in lunches without single-use plastics, this is a great way to start conversations about waste and encourage reusable habits.
4. Sustainability Posters & Presentations
Ask students to research and present three sustainability facts or tips to the class (or can even be done at home), these can be done as presentations or even as posters which can then be displayed as a reminder.
School Sustainability Day- 6th June 2025
Earth Day is a reminder of the need to care for our planet, but we need to continue this mindset beyond this day.
At Uniformd, we believe sustainability shouldn’t be limited to one day a year, it should be part of school culture, every day. That’s why we’ve launched School Sustainability Day, taking place on Friday 6th June 2025.
This initiative is designed to encourage schools across the UK to build greener habits and empower students, teachers, and families to take simple, meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future.
Whether it’s rethinking how we use school uniforms, cutting back on single-use plastics, or choosing to walk or cycle to school, School Sustainability Day is about making sustainability a lasting part of school culture.
