This year the Chinese New Year, which is known as Chunjie in China, begins on the 29th of January, with celebrations lasting 15 days till the 12th of February 2025. It is based on the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian (solar) calendar that we typically use, meaning that the date it starts is not the same every year.

The colour red is extremely important during this time, it is seen as the colour of good luck and good fortune, which is why it is common to see homes and streets decorated with red lanterns and decorations. Families will also give red envelopes, known as Hongbao, which are usually filled with money and given to children to symbolise good luck and prosperity for the New Year.
